To operate a vehicle equipped with air brakes in Ontario, drivers must obtain the Air Brake (Z) Endorsement on their licence. (Exemptions apply to farm vehicle operators with Class D licences, truck technicians with Class G licences when conducting road tests, and tow truck drivers towing disabled vehicles.) Unlike other provinces (and the U.S.), this is not the removal of an air brake restriction but an added endorsement (Z) to the driver’s license. This endorsement is mandatory for Class A licences, optional for Classes B through D, and unavailable for Classes E and F (these are for small buses/ambulances without air brakes, so Z is not applicable). Before taking the required air brake test, you must already hold a Class G licence (or higher), pass a vision test, and complete a medical exam.

To obtain your Z Endorsement, you must pass the written knowledge test based on the Ontario Official Air Brake Handbook. Topics covered on the Z Endorsement Exam include components of an air brake system (Compressor, Governor, Air Dryer, Supply (Wet) Tank, Primary/Secondary Tanks, Valves, Brake Chambers, Air Brake Safety Systems) and inspection procedures, just to name a few items upon which you’ll be tested. With such a tremendous amount of material to cover, supplementing your study of the official handbook with our practice tests is paramount (and a huge time-saver!).

You must also complete an approved Air Brake course and pass a practical Air Brake test, which includes a pre-trip air brake inspection and brake function test. You must take your road test in an air-brake equipped vehicle specifically designed for the class of licence you are seeking, and the Air Brake knowledge test must be taken at an official DriveTest Centre.

We have practice tests to help you pass the Air Brake knowledge test on your first attempt. We also have practice tests specific to your sought-after class of license. But this Exam Simulator test you’re about to take is different.

Like the official endorsement exam, our Ontario AZ written test with answers is based on the 2025 ON Official Air Brake Handbook. This test includes 70 questions from our full air brake preparation series and mimics what you will face on the official Air Brakes Exam. Unlike our other practice tests, this Exam Simulator is designed to give you a truly realistic testing experience. It doesn’t include our AI Assistant or any other automated help, nor does it provide explanations of the correct answers. Just as on the official knowledge test, with the Exam Simulator test, you’ll be truly on your own. Let’s see if you’re up to the challenge!
