3 Ways to Book Your Drive Test in Ontario

Obtaining a driver’s licence in Canada is a long journey that often takes more than two years to complete. If you are interested in booking a driving test, it means you’re already halfway through. In Ontario, the G2 driving test (which the Ontario Driver’s Handbook calls the “G1 exit test”) is an essential step in this process because it’s your first driving test that assesses your driving skills in real-world conditions.

To take this exam, you need to make an appointment. There are three different ways to do it, and we will explore them in detail.

Before You Book

The first step is to get your G1 licence, which you can obtain after passing the written test. The exam is held at a DriveTest Centre location, and you don’t need an appointment since it operates on a first-come, first-served basis.

These locations are often crowded with students eager to get their licenses, so you should arm yourself with patience and a bottle of water. While waiting in line, you can practise on a G1 written test simulator. It is as close as it gets to the actual exam, so it will help you rehearse everything you’ve learned before your turn comes.

After passing the written test, you should practise driving to accumulate hours behind the wheel under the supervision of a licensed driver. The minimum waiting period for the G2 driving test is 12 months, but a certified driver education course can reduce it by four months.

Before you schedule a G2 road test, you must have the following:

  • Your G1 licence, which should be valid at the time of booking.
  • A specific DriveTest Centre location in mind, where you want to take your test.
  • The preferred date and time of your test, subject to availability.
  • Access to a registered and insured vehicle in good condition in which you plan to take the test.
  • Access to someone who can drive the vehicle or supervise your driving after the test if you fail it (because you still won’t be allowed to drive unsupervised).
  • If you haven’t bought the class G1 licence package, you will also need $53.75 CAD for the G2 road test and $90 CAD for a five-year licence.

When ready, you can book your test online through the DriveTest website, by phone, or in person at a DriveTest Centre location.

Online Booking

Booking a G2 driving test online is one of the most preferred options by student drivers due to its simplicity and convenience. This method helps you avoid long queues at DriveTest Centres and is available 24/7.

To get started, visit the official DriveTest website at DriveTest.ca and navigate to the “Book a Road Test” section. You will need to log in to your existing account or create a new one by providing your personal and G1 licence details.

Once logged in, select your preferred test location and choose an available date and time from the calendar. If you haven’t purchased the class G1 licence package, you must proceed to the payment section. Here, you will pay $53.75 CAD for the driving test and an additional $90 CAD for a five-year licence.

Upon completing the booking process, you will receive a confirmation email with the appointment details. Note that the website does not support multiple bookings using the same email address, so be sure to use your personal email address for this process.

Phone Booking

If you prefer interacting with a DriveTest employee, you can book your G2 driving test by phone. This relatively simple process typically takes about 10 minutes to complete. Before you call, ensure you have your G1 licence nearby, as you will need its details.

You can call either of these numbers to book your test:

  • 647-776-0331
  • 888-570-6110

After dialling the number, an automated system will guide you through the main menu. Several prompts will ask you to select a preferred option, but your primary goal is to speak with a live operator.

They are available to assist you Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Once you connect with them, they will ask you for all the necessary details, including your preferred date, time and location for the test.

In-Person Booking

While online booking is a straightforward process that takes place on a screen, in-person booking also allows you to interact with an employee. This option is best for those who prefer face-to-face communication, where they can also ask questions.

Visit your nearest DriveTest Centre and head to the reception area. (To locate the DriveTest centre nearest you, navigate to the official DriveTest website at DriveTest.ca and select “Find a DriveTest Centre”.) You should arrive early in the morning because high demand can lead to queues with long waiting times.

Bring all the necessary documents and pay the fees at the designated counter using cash, credit card or debit card. When the receptionist requests them, you will provide your G1 licence number, proof of payment and identification documents. (Your G1 licence may be accepted as a valid form of identification because it has your photo on it.) Then, you will choose a date, time and location for the G2 road test.

The staff will assist you in finalizing your booking, but you must ensure that all details are correctly introduced in their system. After the booking is confirmed, you will receive a confirmation receipt with your test details. Keep it safe, as you will need it on the day of the test.

If you need to change or cancel an appointment, you can do so online at the DriveTest.ca website, regardless of whether you made the appointment online, by phone or in person. Navigate to the “Book a Road Test” section and select “Edit an Existing Road Test”. Note, however, that if you cancel a road test within 48 hours of the appointment, you will forfeit your road test fee.
