Yukon is a remote and rugged land, where winter conditions can be extreme. You might be driving on steep grades and tight switchbacks on the Klondike Highway (Highway 2) near Dawson City and Pelly Crossing. Or driving in avalanche zones or on dangerous downgrades on the Haines Highway (Highway 3) near the Chilkat Pass. Or driving on the Robert Campbell Highway (Highway 4), a remote road with loose gravel and steep grades. Well-performing brakes are critical for safety in such situations.

To drive commercial vehicles with air brakes, you must obtain an air brake endorsement on your Class 1, 2, or 3 commercial driver’s licence. The air brake endorsement is mandatory for Class 1 and unavailable for Class 4.

There are two ways you can get the air brake endorsement in Yukon. One way is to complete an approved Air Brake course. Once you’ve done so, your local Motor Vehicle Office will add the endorsement to your commercial licence.

The other way is to pass a knowledge test on air brakes and then pass an air brake practical test. Once you’ve done so, your local Motor Vehicle Office will add the endorsement to your commercial licence. If you wish, you can take the air brake practical test and the driving test for your commercial licence in the same session.

To prepare for your driving test, you’ll practice commercial driving with your commercial learner’s permit. In Yukon, Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) is not currently required for any class of licence.

In Yukon, the official commercial driver’s reference for air brakes is the Yukon Air Brake Manual. But Air Brakes is a challenging subject to master just by reading about it. We offer nine practice tests to reinforce and enhance your knowledge of the subject through intensive repetition.

This Yukon Air Brake practice test is the first of those practice tests. It’s up to date as of April 2025 and based on the official Yukon Air Brake Manual. Our AI Assistant can help you with any question by supplying a hint or rephrasing the question. You can even ask your own questions about any aspect of commercial driving. If you still miss the question, the AI Assistant will immediately show you the correct answer and an explanation.
