To apply for a Class 1 commercial driver’s licence in Saskatchewan, you must be at least 18 years old, hold a full Class 5 driver’s licence, submit a medical report, and pass a vision test.

Next, you must pass a basic knowledge exam on the rules of the road, a sign test on the meanings of road signs, and the Class 1 endorsement (knowledge) test on the theory of operating Class 1 vehicles. The passing score for each test is 80%. The tests are based on the official Saskatchewan Driver’s Handbook and the official Professional Driver’s Handbook.

Because practically all Class 1 vehicles in Saskatchewan have air brakes, you must also obtain an Air Brake endorsement. To do this, you must pass the official Air Brake Knowledge Test and the official Air Brake Practical Test. In the Practical Test, you’ll demonstrate how an air brake system works and how to adjust a manual slack adjuster.

Once you pass the Class 1 knowledge test, you may obtain a Class 1 endorsement on your Class 5 licence, which will allow you to practice commercial driving under supervision.

In Saskatchewan, before you book your road test for a Class 1 licence, you must complete Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT). The MELT course consists of 121.5 hours of classroom and hands-on training in operating Class 1 vehicles, including their air brakes. It’s a good idea to qualify for the Air Brake Endorsement before enrolling in MELT, because some of MELT may assume some understanding of air brakes. In any event, you must qualify for the endorsement before completing MELT.

Once you’ve completed MELT, you may book a road test for a Class 1 driver’s licence. You must take the test in a Class 1 vehicle equipped with air brakes.
