Looking for some help to pass your Quebec Air Brake knowledge test? You’ve come to the right place! This is the first of our ten Quebec Air Brake Practice Tests. We carefully designed them to help you pass the official Air Brakes knowledge test – on your first try.
All applicants for a heavy-vehicle driver’s licence (Classes 1, 2, or 3) must have held a Class 5 driver’s licence for at least two years, passed a vision test, and passed a medical exam. Then you must pass a general knowledge test on the theory of commercial driving. For an Air Brake (“F”) Endorsement, you must also pass a separate Air Brake knowledge test. This endorsement is mandatory for Class 1, optional for Classes 2 and 3, and unavailable for Classes 4A, 4B, and 4C. The air brake test questions are based on information in the official SAAQ manual, Driving a Heavy Vehicle. It’s advisable to register for both knowledge tests at the same time. For the “F” endorsement, you must pass the “F” knowledge test before you take your road tests.
Passing the general knowledge test will entitle you to a commercial learner’s permit, which will allow you to practice commercial driving under supervision. For Classes 1 and 2, you must hold the permit for at least three months. To become a school bus driver, you must also complete an approved training course on driving school buses. Completing an approved training course is not required for other types of heavy vehicles, but doing so may shorten the permit’s required holding period.
When you’re ready, you can schedule your two road tests for your commercial driver’s licence. The first test is a circle check test, in which you inspect the vehicle’s mechanical components. The second test is a driving test. You must take these tests in a vehicle that’s representative of the class of licence you’re applying for. For a Class 1 licence or another class of commercial licence with an air brake endorsement, you must take the road tests in a vehicle equipped with air brakes.
This Quebec Air Brakes Practice Test includes 45 multiple-choice questions on air brakes. All questions are up to date as of May 2025 and based on Driving a Heavy Vehicle.
If you get stuck on a practice question, you can ask our AI Assistant to discuss the question further, give you a hint, or answer your own questions about commercial driving. If you still miss the question, you’ll be shown the correct answer and an explanation.
