Welcome to the first of our three Prince Edward Island (PEI) Class 1 Knowledge Practice Tests! We designed these practice tests to help you pass the official Class 1 knowledge test – on your first try.

To apply for a Class 1 commercial driver’s licence in PEI, you must be at least 19 years old (one year older than in some other provinces), have held a full Class 5 licence for two years, pass a vision test, and submit a medical certificate. After that, you must complete a Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) course offered by a truck driving school.

Once trained, you must pass the official Class 1 knowledge test on the theory of commercial driving. The knowledge test questions are based on the official Prince Edward Island Commercial Vehicle Driver’s Handbook.

For a Class 1 licence, you must also obtain an “A” Air Brake Endorsement. MELT includes training in air brakes. When you feel ready, pass the separate Air Brake knowledge test and the Air Brake practical test before you take the road test for your Class 1 licence. The Air Brake practical test assesses your ability to identify and inspect air brake components, test the performance of the air brakes, and adjust manual slack adjusters.

Passing the knowledge test will allow you to obtain a Class 1 commercial learner’s permit to practice commercial driving under supervision.

When you’re ready, you can book a road test for your commercial driver’s licence. You must take the road test in a Class 1 vehicle equipped with air brakes. The test will include a pre-trip inspection of the vehicle.

This Prince Edward Island Class 1 Knowledge Practice Test includes 25 multiple-choice questions on the theory of operating Class 1 vehicles. All questions are up to date as of May 2025 and based on the official Prince Edward Island Commercial Vehicle Driver’s Handbook.

If you get stuck on a practice question, you can ask our AI Assistant to give you a hint, rephrase the question, or answer any of your own questions about commercial driving. If you still miss the question, the AI Assistant will immediately show you the correct answer and an explanation.

Keep practicing with all our Class 1 Knowledge Practice Tests until you can answer all the questions without help from the AI Assistant. Each time you retake a practice test, the order of the questions will be randomized.
