Class 1 vehicles are less common in Nunavut than elsewhere, although they can still be found supporting mining, construction, and seasonal resupply. The territory is not connected by public roads to the rest of Canada, and many towns are not connected to each other by public roads either. In Nunavut, logistics relies more on ships and planes than trucks. If you want a career in long-haul or interprovincial transport via Class 1 vehicles, you should consider looking for work outside Nunavut.
In Nunavut, applicants for a Class 1 commercial driver’s licence must be at least 18 years old, hold a full Class 5 driver’s licence, pass a vision test, undergo a medical exam, and submit a medical report. Then they must pass the Class 1 knowledge test on commercial driving theory. The test questions are based on the Nunavut Professional Driver’s Handbook.
For a Class 1 licence, you must also obtain an Air Brake endorsement because practically all Class 1 vehicles in Nunavut have air brakes. For this endorsement, you must pass a separate Air Brake knowledge test and an Air Brake practical test. The practical test involves explaining air braking components and testing the brakes for proper operation. These tests are based on the official Nunavut Air Brake Manual.
Passing the general knowledge test will entitle you to get a commercial learner’s permit. This permit will allow you to practice commercial driving under supervision as you prepare to take your road test and pre-trip inspection test. In Nunavut, Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) is not currently required.
Once you’ve passed your Air Brake practical test, you can book the pre-trip inspection test and road test for your commercial driver’s licence. You must take these tests in a Class 1 vehicle equipped with air brakes.
