To operate vehicles equipped with air brakes, drivers must pass the Nova Scotia Air Brake Test, which results in adding an Air Brake Endorsement to the driver’s licence. The Nova Scotia Trucking Rules & Regulations Guidebook is an official publication of the Nova Scotia Department of Public Works and the primary resource for preparing for this test. It outlines key rules, safety standards, licensing requirements, and compliance procedures. It covers topics such as driver licensing, hours of service, cargo securement, vehicle maintenance and inspections, transportation of dangerous goods, and special permits. When used in conjunction with our suite of Nova Scotia practice tests for each stage of your driving certification and restriction-removal process, this Nova Scotia Commercial Driver’s PDF handbook will make studying easier.
In addition to this manual, our suite of practice tests covers air brake materials within the general knowledge exam preparation materials. These practice tests offer immediate feedback on all responses and model the format and material presented in the official Nova Scotia Knowledge Exam. Combining these resources helps to ensure you pass the air brake knowledge test.
To be eligible for the Nova Scotia Air Brake Endorsement, you must hold a valid Class 1-6 driver’s licence from any Canadian jurisdiction and pass the written knowledge test administered at a Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) office. There are currently five Vehicle Compliance Stations (VCS) and 17 mobile patrol units strategically placed throughout the province, with Vehicle Transportation Inspection officers who inspect all aspects of vehicle operation, including the air brake status of drivers.
Passing the Air Brakes Test is no simple task. You must be familiar with air brake systems and inspection procedures, plus the various components of an air brake system, including the Compressor, the Air Dryer, the Tanks, the Valves, and the Brake Chambers. You must also understand how to perform safety inspections and follow proper operating procedures when using an air brake-equipped vehicle, including pre-trip inspections, identifying potential issues or malfunctions, ensuring all controls are functional, and verifying no leaks in hoses or connections.
This is just some of what you must know for the official Air Brake Test. Combining the information from this handbook and our suite of practice tests will ensure you pass the air brakes written test on your first attempt.
