There are specific requirements for obtaining a Class 7 learner’s licence in Nova Scotia. These include a minimum age of 16, a successful vision screening, presenting valid government-issued identification, and, if under 18, providing written parental or guardian consent. You must also pass the Class 7 Knowledge Exam. Failing the Nova Scotia Class 7 Knowledge Exam will result in a one-day wait and a retest fee. Our Nova Scotia Driving Practice Test helps you pass the knowledge exam on your first attempt.
Nova Scotia’s Graduated Driving License (GDL) system consists of three stages to gradually introduce driving privileges to all new drivers, regardless of age: Learner’s Licence (Class 7), Newly Licensed Stage (Class 5N), and Restricted Individual Stage (Class 5).
For Class 7, Nova Scotia imposes strict zero blood alcohol concentration (BAC), supervision restrictions, a midnight to 5 a.m. curfew, protocols for general road safety and emergency vehicle situations, mandatory vehicle inspections, and insurance requirements. You must report any collisions or face penalties for not doing so. Violations can lead to fines, demerit points, licence suspension, and mandatory retesting. The learner’s license is valid for one year, by which time you must pass the road test to move into the Class 5N stage of GDL (or rewrite the Learner’s Test). You cannot exit the GDL system without completing (with proof of completion) an approved driver training program.
Understanding rules associated with posted speed limits, yielding to pedestrians, emergency vehicles, and transit buses, and following the “slow to 60 km/h and move over” rule for stopped emergency vehicles are essential for the exam. Additional rules apply to adverse conditions, including the appropriate use of tires and safety equipment.
The Nova Scotia Knowledge Exam must be taken at a Registry of Motor Vehicles office and comprises two tests of 20 questions each (16 correct responses are required to pass each test). When ready, bring official proof of age, two other pieces of identification, and a consent form for minors if you’re under 18. Check in to complete the other requirements.
