Interested in becoming a professional driver of Class 3 vehicles in the Northwest Territories? Let’s briefly see what that’s like.

In the Northwest Territories, Class 3 vehicles are typically single-unit trucks with three or more axles. However, they can tow a trailer but it must not weigh more than 4,500 kg if it has air brakes. There is a tremendous variety of such trucks, serving a wide range of industries and functions.

To obtain a Northwest Territories Class 3 commercial driver’s licence, you must meet a series of requirements. you must be at least 18 years of age (although you can start preparing at age 17), hold a Class 5 driver’s licence, pass a vision test, and submit a medical report. The Northwest Territories does not require aspiring Class 3 drivers to enroll in Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT).

Next, you must pass a Northwest Territories Class 3 knowledge test on the theory of driving Class 3 vehicles. You must score at least 80% to pass. Passing the test enables you to obtain a Class 3 learner’s licence, which will allow you to practice commercial driving under supervision.

Many (but not all) Class 3 vehicles have air brakes. To drive such trucks, you must become qualified to operate air brakes. In the Northwest Territories, you must complete an approved air brake course and pass the official Air Brake knowledge test. You can take the Class 3 and Air Brake knowledge tests on the same day.

When you feel ready, book a road test for a Class 3 licence. You must take the road test in a Class 3 vehicle. If you’re applying for an Air Brake endorsement, you must pass the Air Brake practical exam, and the test vehicle must be equipped with air brakes.

The Northwest Territories Professional Driver’s Manual and the Air Brake Manual are the official references for aspiring commercial drivers in the province. However, if you would like more intensive knowledge training to ensure you pass the Class 3 knowledge test on your first try, we can help!

We offer three Northwest Territories Class 3 practice tests. This is the first of those practice tests. It covers the basics of operating Class 3 vehicles. All practice questions are based on the above Northwest Territories references. If you get stuck on a question, ask our AI Assistant to give you a hint, rephrase the question, or answer your own questions about commercial driving. If you still miss the question, the AI Assistant will immediately give you the correct answer and an explanation.
