To apply for a Class 1 commercial driver’s licence in Northwest Territories (NWT), you must start by being at least 18 years old, holding a full Class 5 driver’s licence, passing a vision test, and submitting a medical examination report filled out by your doctor.
After you submit the medical report, you must pass an official knowledge exam on the theory of driving Class 1 vehicles. The Class 1 knowledge test will likely include questions on road signs, commercial driving laws, safe Class 1 operating techniques, air brakes, cargo securement, and pre-trip inspections. The passing score is 80%. All questions are based on the official NWT Basic Driver’s Manual and Professional Operator’s Manual.
Once you pass the Class 1 knowledge test, you may obtain a Class 1 learner’s licence, which will allow you to practice commercial driving under supervision.
Because nearly all Class 1 vehicles in NT have air brakes, you must also obtain an Air Brake endorsement. To get this endorsement, you must pass the official Air Brake knowledge and practical tests. You won’t need this endorsement as a learner driver, but you must obtain it before you apply for your Class 1 licence.
After you’ve read the official manuals, would you like more intensive study to ensure you pass the Class 1 knowledge exam – on your first try? Great! That’s just what we’re here for!
This NWT Class 1 Knowledge practice test, the first of three such tests we offer, covers the basics of operating Class 1 vehicles (with air brakes). It consists of 25 multiple-choice questions on air brake systems, braking, coupling, dashboard gauges, pre-trip inspections, traffic signs, and vehicle weight. Like the official knowledge test questions, all practice questions are based on the official manuals.
Our AI Assistant stands ready to help you with any practice question. If you get stuck on a question, ask our AI Assistant to give you a hint, rephrase the question, or answer your own questions about commercial driving. If you still miss the question, the AI Assistant will show you the correct answer and an explanation.
Once you obtain your Class 1 commercial driver’s licence, you should find that Class 1 drivers are in high demand in NWT. Mining (especially diamond mining) is NWT’s largest private economic sector. Class 1 drivers are in high demand to haul equipment to mines and haul ore and processed minerals from the mines. Class 1 drivers are also in high demand to transport fuel to remote areas, sometimes over ice roads in winter.
