To obtain a Class 5 learner’s licence in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL), you must pass the Class 5 Knowledge Exam. To qualify for the exam, you must be at least 16 years old, pass a vision screening, and present valid government-issued identification. For drivers under 18, written parental or guardian consent is also required. There is a one-day waiting period and a retest fee if you fail the exam. Our Free Newfoundland and Labrador Learner’s Licence Practice Test helps ensure you pass the knowledge exam on your first attempt.

The NL Knowledge Exam is available in multiple languages and comprises 40 multiple-choice questions covering road rules, traffic control signs, right-of-way rules, defensive driving strategies, and more. You must take the exam online through the MyGovNL portal or at a Motor Registration Division (MRD) office, and you must correctly answer at least 34 out of 40 (85%) questions to pass.

Once you receive a Class 5 Learner’s Licence, you must be accompanied by a fully licensed driver with at least four years of driving experience and only drive from 5 a.m. to midnight. These restrictions are part of NL’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system, which reduces restrictions through a three-stage process: Class 5 (Level I: Learner’s Licence), Class 5 (Level II: Probationary Licence), and the full Class 5 licence. The GDL program and its restrictions and holding periods apply to all new drivers, including adults. There are also sign display requirements in NL (an L on the back of your vehicle if you are in the learner’s phase or a P if you are in the probationary phase). Each GDL phase requires a 12-month holding period (for those who have completed an approved driver education course, the learner’s phase is eight months).

Our Free Newfoundland and Labrador Learner’s Permit Practice Test is based on the most recent version of the Newfoundland and Labrador Driver’s Handbook. The practice test contains 20 multiple-choice questions formatted like the actual test and provides immediate explanations for each response to speed the learning process.

This practice test is one of three in our suite of NL learning materials. We also feature practice tests specific to traffic signs, road situations, and fines and regulations, which are significant parts of your knowledge exam. Additional features are available for our premium members. Check out our other NL Knowledge Exam Practice Tests!
