A significant part of the Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Class 5 Knowledge Exam is traffic signs and road situations. To obtain a Class 5 learner’s licence in NL, an individual must be at least 16 years old, pass a vision screening and the Class 5 Knowledge Exam, and present valid government-issued identification. If you’re under 18, you must provide written parental or guardian consent to test. If you fail the exam, you must wait one day and pay a fee to retest. Our NL Traffic Signs and Road Situations Practice Test covers everything necessary to pass the knowledge exam on your first attempt.
Once the requirements are met and you receive a Class 5 Learner’s Licence, you must be accompanied by a fully licensed driver with four years of driving experience and may not drive from midnight to 5 a.m. These restrictions are part of NL’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system which reduces restrictions through a three-stage process: Class 5 (Level I: Learner’s Licence), Class 5 (Level II: Probationary Licence), and the full Class 5 licence. The GDL program and its restrictions and holding periods apply to all new drivers, including adults. In NL, you must display an L on the back of your vehicle if you are in the learner’s phase or a P if you are in the probationary phase. Each phase requires a 12-month holding period (for those who have completed an approved driver education course, the learner’s phase is eight months).
The NL Knowledge Exam (available in English, French, and Ukrainian) comprises 40 multiple-choice questions covering road rules, traffic control signs, right-of-way rules, and defensive driving strategies. You may take the exam online through the MyGovNL portal or at a Motor Registration Division (MRD) office and must correctly answer at least 34 out of 40 (85%) questions to pass.
Our NL Traffic Signs and Road Situations Practice Test is based on the most recent version of the Newfoundland and Labrador Driver’s Handbook. Containing 30 multiple-choice questions to assess your knowledge of traffic signs and road situations, immediate explanations for each response will be provided. With this approach, you’ll learn faster and pass this part of the official knowledge test on your first attempt.
