With a Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Class 2 commercial driver’s licence, you’re not limited to driving Class 2 vehicles (full-size buses). You may also drive Class 3 vehicles (single-unit trucks), Class 4 vehicles (smaller buses), and Class 5 vehicles (cars and small trucks). You may find employment opportunities operating any of these types of vehicles, including coach buses, school buses, shuttle buses, transit buses, youth program shuttles, and seniors’ and accessible transportation.

To apply for a Class 2 commercial driver’s licence in NL, you must have held a full Class 5 driver’s licence for at least one year and pass a vision test.

Next, you must pass an official written knowledge test on the theory of driving Class 2 vehicles. The passing score is 80%. Because most Class 2 vehicles in NL have air brakes, you should also obtain an Air Brake endorsement. To do this, pass the official Air Brake knowledge test. (You can take the Air Brake knowledge test online.)

Once you pass the Class 2 knowledge test, you must submit a Routine Medical Form about your medical status to any Digital Government and Service NL location. Once the form is approved, you may obtain a Class 2 learner’s licence, which will allow you to practice commercial driving under supervision. Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) is not required for a Class 2 licence in NL.

Once you feel ready, you may take the road test for a commercial driver’s licence. You must take the road test in a Class 2 bus. If the vehicle has air brakes, you must have an Air Brake endorsement.

Digital Government and Service NL has not published a general commercial driver’s licence manual, although it has published an official Air Brake Manual. The final chapter of the NL Driver’s Handbook has some information about general commercial driving. Want more intensive knowledge training in Class 2 driving than this? We can help!

We have seven Newfoundland and Labrador Class 2 Knowledge practice tests for you to try, of which this one is just the first. We designed these practice tests to help aspiring commercial drivers like you pass their Class 2 knowledge tests – on their first try. This practice test covers the basics of operating Class 2 vehicles. If you get stuck on a question, ask our AI Assistant to give you a hint, discuss the question in more depth, or answer your own questions about commercial driving. If you still miss the question, the AI Assistant will give you the correct answer and an explanation.
