To apply for a Class 1 commercial driver’s licence in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL), you must have held a full Class 5 driver’s licence for at least one year, be at least 19 years of age (a year older than in some other provinces), pass a vision test, and submit a medical examination report.

After you submit the medical report, you must pass an official knowledge test on the theory of driving Class 1 vehicles. The passing score is 80%. Because nearly all Class 1 vehicles in NL have air brakes, you must also obtain an Air Brake endorsement. To do this, complete an approved Air Brake course and pass the official Air Brake knowledge test and practical test. The Class 1 knowledge test may also include some questions on air brake systems, so studying air brakes may help you pass both knowledge tests.

Once you pass the Class 1 knowledge test, you may obtain a Class 1 learner’s licence, which will allow you to practice commercial driving under supervision.

In NL, before you may book your road test for a Class 1 driver’s licence, you must also complete Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT). The MELT course consists of 112.5 hours of classroom training and hands-on training in operating large semi-trucks, including their air brakes. Because MELT includes inspecting and operating a truck with air brakes, you should obtain the Air Brakes endorsement before starting MELT. (Some MELT course providers may require you to have the Air Brakes endorsement before enrolling in their course.)

Once you’ve completed MELT, you may take the road test for a commercial driver’s licence.

Digital Government and Service NL has not published a general commercial driver’s license manual, although it has published an official Air Brake Manual. The final chapter of the NL Driver’s Handbook has some information about general commercial driving. If you would like more intensive knowledge training in Class 1 driving than this, we can help!

This Newfoundland and Labrador Class 1 Knowledge practice test, the first of three such tests we offer, covers the basics of operating Class 1 vehicles (with air brakes). If you get stuck on a question, ask our AI Assistant to give you a hint, discuss the question in more depth, or answer your own questions about commercial driving. If you still miss the question, the AI Assistant will give you the correct answer and an explanation.
