To apply for a Class 3 commercial driver’s licence in New Brunswick, you must be at least 18 years old, hold a full Class 5 or higher driver’s licence with a clean driving record, pass a vision test, undergo a medical exam, and submit a Medical Examination Report. (Try to submit the report soon because you can’t take the road test for a Class 3 licence until the report has been approved.) After submitting the medical report, you must pass a New Brunswick Class 3 knowledge test on the theory of driving Class 3 vehicles. The passing score is 80%. Many Class 3 vehicles in New Brunswick have air brakes, so you should seriously consider obtaining an Air Brake endorsement. To do this, pass the official Air Brake knowledge test and the Practical Air Brake test. You must complete these steps and get your endorsement before you start driving Class 3 vehicles with air brakes unsupervised. Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) is not required for a Class 3 licence in New Brunswick.

Once you pass the Class 3 knowledge test, you may obtain a Class 3 learner’s licence, which will allow you to practice commercial driving under supervision.

Once you’re ready, you may take the road test for a Class 3 commercial driver’s licence. You must take the road test in a Class 3 vehicle. If you’re also applying for an Air Brake endorsement (which would probably be a good idea), the vehicle must be equipped with air brakes.

The Department of Public Safety does not appear to have published a general commercial driver’s licence manual, although it has published an Air Brake Manual. Part 9 of the New Brunswick Driver’s Handbook has just a little information about general commercial driving.
