In New Brunswick, some requirements for a commercial driver’s licence (Class 1, 2, 3, or 4) and some for an air brake endorsement depend on the class of licence you’ll be applying for.
All applicants for a commercial driver’s licence must be at least 18 years old, hold a Class 5 driver’s licence, pass a medical exam and a vision test, and pass a general knowledge test on the theory of commercial driving. If you are applying for an Air Brake Endorsement on a Class 2 or 3 licence (this endorsement is unavailable for Class 4), you must also complete an approved Air Brakes course and pass a separate Air Brake knowledge test. For Class 1, this endorsement is mandatory. The general knowledge test for Class 1 includes test questions on air brakes, so a separate air brake knowledge test is not required. All air brake test questions are based on the official New Brunswick Air Brake Manual.
For Classes 1 through 3, passing the general knowledge test will entitle you to a commercial learner’s licence, which will allow you to practice commercial driving under supervision. Class 4 applicants can practice commercial driving with their Class 5 licence.
When you’re ready, you can schedule a road test for your commercial driver’s licence. However, if you’re applying for a Class 1 licence, you must complete Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) before taking the road test. MELT for Class 1 includes training in air brakes. If you’re going for an air brake endorsement for Class 2 or 3, be sure to complete an approved Air Brake course before taking the knowledge test.
You must take the road test in a vehicle that’s representative of the class of licence you’re applying for. For a Class 1 licence or a Class 2 or 3 licence with a planned air brake endorsement, you must take the road test in a vehicle equipped with air brakes.
Unfortunately, neither reading the official Air Brake Manual nor taking a short Air Brake course can ensure you’ll pass the Air Brakes knowledge test on your first try. But our knowledge test preparation program does!
