Driving conditions in Manitoba can be tough in winter. You might be driving down a steep hill on Highway 10 near Riding Mountain National Park when ice or snow has increased your vehicle’s braking distance. Or you might be driving on an icy stretch of Highway 6 on a winter night when a moose suddenly crosses the road ahead of you. Good brakes are crucial in situations like these.
To drive commercial vehicles with air brakes on Manitoba’s public roads, you must obtain an air brake endorsement on a commercial driver’s licence (Class 1, 2, or 3). To do this, you must meet a series of requirements. First, what are some requirements for a commercial licence?
To learn to operate any class of commercial vehicle, you must obtain Authorized Instruction, which will allow you to practice commercial driving under supervision. To get this credential, you must hold a Class 5 licence and pass a knowledge test that’s appropriate for the class of commercial licence you’re applying for. The knowledge test covers the basics of operating such vehicles.
You must hold this credential for at least two weeks. Once you feel ready, you can book a road test for a commercial driver’s licence. You must take the road test in a vehicle that’s consistent with the class of licence you’re applying for. However, for a Class 1 licence, you must complete Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) before taking the road test.
To get the air brake endorsement, you must complete an approved Air Brake course (typically one or two days), pass an air brake written knowledge test, and pass an air brake practical test. The air brake knowledge test will evaluate your understanding of air brake theory. The air brake practical test will assess your ability to conduct a pre-trip inspection of your vehicle’s air braking system.
In Manitoba, the official commercial driver’s reference for air brakes is Manitoba Public Insurance’s Air Brake Manual. However, air brake theory is challenging to master just by reading about it or taking a short course. We offer fourteen practice tests to reinforce and enhance your knowledge of the subject through intensive repetition.
This is the first of our Manitoba Air Brake practice tests. It’s up to date as of May 2025 and based on the official Air Brake Manual. Our AI Assistant can help you with any question by supplying a hint or rephrasing the question. You can even ask it questions about any aspect of commercial driving.
