To upgrade to a British Columbia Class 2 (bus) commercial driver’s licence, you must have held a full-privilege British Columbia Class 5 or 6 licence for at least two years with a relatively clean driving record, be at least 19 years old, and pass a vision test. You must also disclose any medical conditions that might impair safe driving.
Next, you must pass an official road signs test and an knowledge test on the theory of driving Class 2 vehicles. You must score at least 80% on each test to pass. Passing these tests enables you to obtain a Class 2 learner’s licence, which will allow you to practice commercial driving under supervision. Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) is not required for a Class 2 licence.
Because nearly all Class 2 vehicles in British Columbia have air brakes, you should get an Air Brake Endorsement. To get started, complete a certified Air Brake course and pass the official Air Brake knowledge test.
The standard reference for all commercial knowledge tests is the ICBC handbook Driving Commercial Vehicles.
Once you pass the Class 2 knowledge test, you may obtain a Class 2 learner’s licence, which will allow you to practice commercial driving under supervision. When you feel ready, you may take the road test for a Class 2 commercial driver’s licence. The road test will include a pre-trip inspection test. You must take these tests in a Class 2 vehicle. If you’re also applying for an Air Brake endorsement, the pre-trip inspection test will include an air brake inspection, and the test vehicle must have air brakes.
Once you pass, you’ll be issued a temporary Class 2 licence. Ask your doctor to complete a Driver’s Medical Examination Report form and send it to RoadSafety BC. They will decide whether you’re medically fit to drive Class 2 vehicles.
