Want to become a Class 1 (combination vehicle) commercial driver in Alberta? You’ve made an excellent career choice! Drivers of semi-trucks and tractor-trailers should find plenty of employment opportunities in the province. Demand for combination vehicle drivers is especially high in Alberta’s all-important petroleum industry. Demand for combination truck drivers is also high in agriculture and agribusiness, forestry and logging, and freight and logistics (mainly for retail and e-commerce).

To apply for a Class 1 commercial driver’s licence in Alberta, you must be at least 18 years of age, hold a Class 5 driver’s licence, submit a medical form completed by a doctor or nurse practitioner, and pass a vision test.

Next, you must enroll in Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT). The MELT course includes classroom instruction, yard training (pre-trip inspections and basic maneuvers), and behind-the-wheel driving. Complete the classroom portion and pass a written knowledge test on the theory of driving Class 1 vehicles. (Because a Class 1 licence also allows you to drive other classes of commercial vehicles, there may be some questions on the test about those as well.) You must score at least 80% to pass. Passing the test enables you to obtain a Class 1 learner’s licence, which will allow you to practice commercial driving under supervision.

For a Class 1 licence, you must be qualified to operate air brakes. To do this, start by completing an approved air brake course and passing an air brake knowledge test. You can take both knowledge tests on the same day.

Before you take the road test for a Class 1 licence, you must complete MELT and pass a practical test on air brakes.

The Commercial Driver’s Guide and the Air Brake Manual – A Guide for Students are the official references for aspiring commercial drivers in the province.
