Before you may obtain a commercial driver’s licence of any class in Alberta, you must pass a written knowledge test and a practical test. The knowledge test is a multiple-choice test. The test takes about 30 minutes, and you must score at least 80% to pass. The questions on the knowledge test partly depend on which class of commercial licence you’re applying for. (As you would expect, the Class 1 knowledge test may have questions on cargo management, and the Class 2 test may have questions on passenger management and safety.)
For a Class 1 or Class 2 licence, you’re also required to complete Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT). The MELT course will take about 113 hours for Class 1 or 50 hours for Class 2. It includes classroom instruction, yard training (pre-trip inspections and basic maneuvers), and behind-the-wheel driving.
Nearly all large commercial vehicles (including Class 1 semi-trucks and Class 2 full-size buses) are equipped with air brakes. To be qualified to operate air brakes, you must obtain an Air Brakes (“Q”) endorsement on your commercial licence. An exception is Class 1, for which air brake qualification is a legal requirement. For either a Class 1 licence or the Q endorsement, you must complete an approved air brake course and answer knowledge test questions on air brakes. The course includes 6½ hours of classroom instruction, 45 minutes of practical instruction and practice, and a 15-minute practical test. Then you must pass a practical assessment and a separate official Air Brakes knowledge test. Once you pass the knowledge test, you can get the Q endorsement.
